Mosquitos
The island is essentially a beach mostly covered with a mangrove forest, there are lots of ponds with sitting water.
I got bitten on my ankles on the first morning, and arms and neck later on. After that I sprayed all my exposed bits morning and evening.
Chilling on the beach
Our favourite spot was Mandarina (https://maps.app.goo.gl/Wr7STwaiPqPxbhtB7) , not the fanciest but nice and decent loungers with waiter service.
Other places were nicer but had a minimum spend which we found hard to hit with beers alone, probably fine if you have food too.
Tours
We didn’t go on the kayak tour through the mangroves, wish we did. Spoke to someone else who saw crocodiles.
I went for a few runs and saw pink flamingos near the very west of the island, very cool.
The racoons are very cheeky, we saw one rifle through someones bag on the beach!
Food
Our favourite spot for a Mexican breakfast was easily Le Bluk (https://maps.app.goo.gl/tPjzmvAEeWoGHTRf8), they take cards. I’d recommend chiquilá with red sauce and eggs, and a green juice. The fruit bowl with yoghurt and granola was also really good, big enough for two.
We went here twice it was that good, Big Fish (https://maps.app.goo.gl/zWR9c5rA9qeykEw86). Recommendations: tuna tostadas, fried fish (ask for tortillas to go with it), shrimp ceviche in a red chilli sauce, they do very good passion fruit pina coladas too. Also the guacamole is excellent, but then again it is wherever you go!. The octopus in soy sauce was super delicious.
Amazing quesadillas here, perfect with a cold bottle of Victoria lager, get the consomme for extra flavour: La Catrina (https://maps.app.goo.gl/5Ebw9Mi5bmVS8ZMD9)
La Mexiqueanse (https://maps.app.goo.gl/15XhU5pt8uJD2HMWA) did the best guacamole I think, the crunchy grasshoppers were optional but very nice. The rest of the food was amazing. “Water of the day” is a fruit juice, fresh and delicious, they don’t serve booze.
The shrimps fried in flakes of coconut was really good at Las Panchas (https://maps.app.goo.gl/1PWv9SxbNx5NdTha9), also excellent mezcalitas. Cash only.
Complemento do good coffee there are a few of them around, very nice açai bowls too if you fancy something different for breakfast.
Drinks
Probably not the spot for a family holiday, but this place has an insane collection of mezcal / tequila, we spent a few happy hours there one evening: Tequila O Clock (https://maps.app.goo.gl/tXCjcMXoYUTbFNmi9)
More
Most places take cards, but it’s worth having some pesos for tips and the odd cash only place.
